The speculation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
