Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
